If you love dogs and want an exciting hobby/sport, you should get involved in Junior Showmanship.  Junior Showmanship is for children ages 10 to 18. Below I have outlined some helpful guides to getting started, learning and becoming a Junior Handler.

1. Information online: 

Before you do anything you first need to find a little about Junior Showmanship.  You could look on-line at  www.akc.org or www.infodog.com. There is lots of good information about Junior Showmanship and dog shows in general.  If you want to learn about registering a dog or official rules of the competitive shows visit www.akc.org.  If you want to find out a list of shows that are in your area or results of a most recent show just check out www.infodog.com.

2. Attend a dog show:

Then after you found out a little more about Junior Showmanship you should attend a dog show.  There are many different types of dog shows and here are three:

1.     Confirmation

2.     Agility

3.     Obedience

There are also AKC sanctioned matches.  These are not official shows but are a competition practice.  The matches cost

nothing but are a good place to go and practice for the real thing.

3. Requirements:

Then you want to get some equipment such as a dog crate, a show lead, a leash, and a box/container to hold your supplies, a professional outfit, and treats for your dog.  Of course, first you need to decide on a dog.  That’s next!

4. Choose a Dog that is best for you:

    Before you go to training classes you need to get a dog. Just don't go by any dog, by one that is the right dog for you. Talk to people about the different breeds that are available. The best method for choosing a dog is to.......
